John Moore Does Good

One of my favorite blogs is John Moore's Brand Autopsy. I like it because I learn a lot - plus John is an engaging writer and marketer. I DON'T like it because I often find myself saying, "Geez, that's a way better idea than the one I had." One example of that is John's nifty feature he calls Biz Book Money Quotes.

John pulls tasty morsels from business books and serves them up in a convenient slideshow. His current offering is from the new book by Jack and Suzy Welch. You ought to take a look.

Build It or Kill It?

I came across an article recently copyrighted by Banking Strategies. I don't know who or what Banking Strategies might be, but the article quotes Raymond Davis, CEO of Umpqua Bank. I'm also not very familiar with Umpqua, but I'm told by banker friends that Umpqua is infamous for their innovative, non-bank approach to almost everything. Here's what Mr. Davis had to say:

I always tell people that there are only two doors to go through, I don't care what kind of business you're in. Either you build it or you kill it, so which one do you want? There's none of this "I'm just going to stay the same" stuff.

Ya gotta love the clarity of that - build it or kill it. Staying the same is a de facto act of killing your product or your business. I'm thinking that's not what you want to do. Here's the thing: Every product and every service that has ever been purchased has been purchased in anticipation of life getting better for the purchaser. How does your product make life better for the purchaser? How much better?

What we're aiming for is a product (or a price, or an experience, etc.) that is just so damn much better that the prospective purchaser thinks, "I'd be crazy not to buy that." Incremental competitive advantages, or 10% better won't get it done - the cost (or aggravation, or time, etc.) of switching is just too high.

Buckminster Fuller once said, "You never change anything by fighting it. You change things by making them obsolete through superior technology."
